Bravo! 100 Years of the Brassiere
In the April 1907 edition of American Vogue, a new phrase was coined for the latest developments in breast support for women, and the brassiere was launched into the world (or, you could say “a bra was born”).
The idea of clothing for support and enhancement of the bust was nothing new, records dating back to ancient Crete show that women have been improving their shape for millennia. The birth of the brassiere, however, marked the change from these garments being “unmentionables” to items of fashion.
The development of the bra has been as varied as the fashions that have covered it, and new textile technologies will no doubt lead to new and exciting fashions.
But for now, let us put our hands together and celebrate the power to lift and seperate.
Happy Birthday Bra!
